Robert S. McNamara Fellowships Program

We are pleased to inform you that the Robert S. McNamara Fellowships Program 2022-2023 is open for doctoral (PhD) studies. It is a fully funded scholarship for international students which provides the recipients with as much as $42,750 net per fellow (successful applicants under) for an eight-month fellowship.

Robert S. McNamara Fellowship

The World Bank Robert S. McNamara Fellowship Program grants fellowships for PhD applicants from developing countries to undertake creative, development-related PhD studies under the supervision of a study consultant at a partner organization overseas through a 6-10-month residency span. The research starts from September to May each year; (that is, from September to May in the following year of course).

NOTE: Scholar refers to successful applicants of a scholarship. The term “Fellow” is used the same way in this context, but for a fellowship instead of a scholarship.

Courses Offered: Applicants will have the option to select in the application whether they would like to be hosted by the Development research department or the Impact evaluation department in the World Bank’s Development Economics Vice Presidency (DEC).

Eligible Countries: Nationals of World Bank WBG member countries, with preference to citizens of developing countries.

Eligibility Criteria for Robert S. McNamara Fellowships Program

To be eligible for the Robert S. McNamara Fellowships Program as an applicant, you will need to meet the following  eligibility criteria. You must be:

  • Graduates of MA level studies or currently pursuing a PhD in Economics or a related field;
  • No more than 35 years of age by June 30th of the year the fellowship starts;
  • Available to relocate to Washington, D.C. for the duration of the fellowship.
  • Required Languages: English

 

Financial Benefit:

Robert S. McNamara Fellowships Program provides the recipient with the following benefits:

  • Totaling $42,750 net per fellow for an 8-month fellowship (can be paid in monthly installments)
  • Since the fellows will be hosted at the World Bank in Washington D.C., the World Bank’s HR will assist the selected candidates with visa ap­plications by providing invitation letters.

Also, keep note that the fellowship does not cover visa application costs, travel expenses, or any other expenses to bring and/or support fel­lows’ family members.

The World Bank Robert S. McNamara Fellowship Program (RSMFP) awards fellowships for developing country PhD candidates to conduct innovative, development-related, doctoral research under the supervision of a research advisor at the World Bank in Washington D.C. for 8 months (September to May each year).

Application Procedure for Robert S. McNamara Fellowships Program

The RSMFP application must be completed online before or by the application deadline date. Below are the required documents to be provided in order to successfully apply:

  • A resume,
  • The statement of research interests should describe interests in research and indicate the research programs of interest within DEC.
  • Contact details for a letter of recommendation,
  • A writing sample (optional),
  • A code sample (optional).

All required documents stated must be uploaded online. Any documents provided by an applicant through email, posts or any means other than the online application form will not be reviewed.
