About the University
The University of Waikato (Māori: Te Whare Wānanga o Waikato), is a public research university in Hamilton, New Zealand established in 1964. An additional campus is located in Tauranga.
The university provides a strong, research-led global contribution in the disciplines of education, social sciences, and management and is an innovator in environmental science, marine and freshwater ecology, engineering and computer science. It offers degrees in Health, Engineering, computer science, management, Māori and Indigenous Studies, the Arts, Psychology, Social Sciences and Education.
In relation to the University, the Kīngitanga has played a pivotal role, with King Koroki giving his personal support to the establishment of a university in Kirikiriroa/Hamilton, which led to the project gaining the support of Waikato iwi. This is notable as, when the University of Waikato was set up in 1964, it was on a site that had been part of lands confiscated from Waikato-Tainui by the Crown in 1865, only returned later, in 1995.
The University and the Kīngitanga have had an active relationship over the course of the University’s history, including the establishment of the new campus in Tauranga, and the awarding of honorary doctorates to a number of tribal members. Most recently, doctoral honors were awarded to Kīngi Tūheitia in 2016.
About The Scholarship
The University of Waikato established the International excellence scholarship in 2015, aiming to promote education and promote young talents who are applying for the undergraduate program for the first time. International Excellence Scholarship of up to NZD$ 10,000 will be awarded to students with excellent academic achievements and to students who possess the potential to become global ambassadors for the University of Waikato.
The scholarship is applicable to the tuition fee only, the applicant has to apply for the student visa and pay for their first-year fee, the funding will be transferred to the tuition fee once the enrollment process is completed. The scholarship is valid for 12 months from the date outlined in the offer of a place, and the scholarship is non-refundable to the students.

Eligibility
Before applying for any scholarship, it is important to know if you are qualified for the scholarship or not
- The applicant must be a citizen of one of the countries mentioned above and not belong to New Zealand.
- The scholarship is not applicable to exchange program students.
- Applicants must be residing overseas at the time of applying for a scholarship.
- The applicant must meet the English language requirement of the University of Waikato.
- The applicant should be applying to enroll for an undergraduate or postgraduate program for the first time at the University of Waikato.
- The applicant must have a minimum GPA that’s equivalent to B+.
- The study tenure should be a full-time degree program of a minimum of 12 months, at least.
- English proficiency is required in the form of IELTS or TOEFL score.
- Applicants must reside in New Zealand after successfully getting the scholarship, and the scholarship holder cannot take more than 50% of the courses online.
